Mediterranean diseases

If you are going on vacation with your dog, you should inform yourself about possible diseases that he could catch there. Especially in the Mediterranean region, there are some pathogens that can be dangerous for dogs. In this article, you will find out what Mediterranean diseases there are, how you can recognize and treat them and how you can protect your dog preventively.

Leishmaniasis

Leishmaniasis is an infectious disease caused by parasites. The parasites are transmitted through the bite of a sand fly, which is mainly active in the evening and at night. The disease can manifest itself in various forms, for example as skin, mucous membrane or organ leishmaniasis. The symptoms vary depending on the form, but can include hair loss, skin changes, weight loss, fever, anemia or kidney failure. Leishmaniasis cannot be cured, but it can be treated with medication. Treatment must be continued for life to prevent a relapse. To protect your dog from leishmaniasis, you should treat it with a suitable sand fly repellent and not leave it outside at night.

Babesiosis

Babesiosis is another infectious disease caused by parasites. The parasites are transmitted by the bite of a tick, which is mainly found in warm and humid areas. The disease can be acute or chronic and leads to the destruction of red blood cells. Symptoms include fever, blood in the urine, jaundice, loss of appetite or weakness. Babesiosis can be fatal if it is not recognized and treated in time. Treatment consists of an infusion and medication against the parasites. To protect your dog from babesiosis, you should regularly check him for ticks, remove them if necessary and treat him with a suitable anti-tick agent.

Ehrlichiosis

Ehrlichiosis is another infectious disease caused by parasites. The parasites are also transmitted by the bite of a tick, which is particularly common in southern Europe. The disease can progress in three phases: acute, subclinical or chronic. The symptoms vary depending on the phase, but can include fever, nosebleeds, swelling of the lymph nodes, lameness or a tendency to bleed. Ehrlichiosis can be treated with antibiotics if diagnosed early. To protect your dog from ehrlichiosis, you should take the same measures as for babesiosis.

Mediterranean diseases are serious dangers for your dog when you go on vacation with him. You should therefore be well informed and take precautions to protect your dog.

The authors assume that a veterinarian should be consulted if an animal is ill and that medication should only be taken after consultation with a doctor or pharmacist. Only an individual examination can lead to a diagnosis and treatment decision.
