Leptospires

Leptospires are bacteria that can cause a serious disease called leptospirosis in dogs. This disease can lead to kidney failure, liver damage and even death. Leptospires are found in the environment, especially in damp areas and stagnant water. Dogs can become infected if they come into contact with contaminated water or urine or if they eat infected animals.

Symptoms and diagnosis

The symptoms of leptospirosis can vary depending on the dog and the organ affected. The most common signs include

To diagnose leptospirosis, the vet must take a blood and urine sample and test for antibodies or DNA from the bacteria. Sometimes several tests are necessary to make a definitive diagnosis.

Treatment and prevention

Treatment for leptospirosis consists of antibiotics to kill the bacteria. Depending on the severity of the disease, the dog may also require infusion therapy, painkillers or other supportive measures. The prognosis depends on how early the treatment is started and how well the dog responds to it.

To prevent leptospirosis, dogs should be kept away from potentially contaminated water sources or muzzled to prevent ingestion. There are also vaccinations against some strains of leptospirosis, which can be discussed with your vet. However, vaccination does not protect against all types of leptospira and must be repeated regularly.

Leptospirosis is a serious disease that can endanger not only dogs but also humans. Therefore, you should act quickly if you suspect you have the disease and have both your dog and yourself tested.

The authors assume that a veterinarian should be consulted if an animal is ill and that medication should only be taken after consultation with a doctor or pharmacist. Only an individual examination can lead to a diagnosis and treatment decision.
