Arachnoid cysts

A representation of Arachnoid cysts

Arachnoid cysts are fluid-filled blisters that form between the meninges (the layers surrounding the brain) or the spinal cord. They can occur in dogs of any breed, age and sex, but are more common in young to middle-aged dogs.

Causes and symptoms

The exact cause of arachnoid cysts is not known, but they can be congenital or caused by trauma, infection or inflammation. Symptoms depend on the size and location of the cyst. Some dogs show no signs, while others may have neurological problems such as seizures, paralysis, pain, incoordination or behavioral changes.

Diagnosis and treatment

To diagnose an arachnoid cyst, your vet will need to perform a thorough clinical examination and may need to use imaging techniques such as X-rays, ultrasound or magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). Treatment will depend on the severity of the symptoms and the risk of complications. Some dogs may require no therapy, while others may require medication to relieve pain or inflammation or surgery to remove or drain the cyst.

The authors assume that a veterinarian should be consulted if an animal is ill and that medication should only be taken after consultation with a doctor or pharmacist. Only an individual examination can lead to a diagnosis and treatment decision.
